A mother's report on her son with ADD

Dr. Esty, Dr. Sitar and staff, Congratulations on your recent article in the Washingtonian!

JD's Dec 05 IEP went very well. This school year I have not received one note home about his lack of attention or disturbance of classmates. I appreciate all the help you have given JD and I. So many people/relatives comment on what a pleasant boy he is now. I am sure you'll be very busy and wish you the best! Fondly, [mother of JD]

Below is an e-mail that I sent to the staff at xxxx. "Dear [school] Staff, I thought you may be interested in reading the Jan 2006 Washingtonian Article, "Pumping Neurons" pages 131-138. Dr. Mary Lee Esty and Dr. Michael Sitar are the doctors who treated JD for his ADD starting in Dec 2005.

I discussed these treatments with my pediatrician. She did not recommend medication at that time and said why not give the neurotherapy (EEG neurofeedback) and neurofeedback a try because it has no medical side effects like medications do. She said the only draw back if it didn't work would be the loss of time and money because it is not covered by our insurance.

When I started to get positive reports on JD from [teachers] I was so excitged to see it working. The speech pathologist that saw JD the Spring of 2005 saw no signs of ADD. I hope you can pass information about these treatments to other parents. This has been a wonderful year at [school] and at home. He is not frustrated and overwhelmed as he was before treatment.

I appreciate all you have done for JD and I. Those were some rough years for us and you helped us through it physically and emotionally. I know JD has learning disabilities but now it is manageable. The recommendations you gave us at the last IEP are extremely helpful. In addition, we appreciate all the help you are providing at school.

Gratefully yours, [mother of JD]
